The Cancer Center at Providence

The Cancer Center at Providence combines the strengths of three organizations—Providence Hospital, Sacred Heart Health System and Seton Health Corporation of South Alabama—which are committed to working together to provide the highest quality cancer care to patients living along the Gulf Coast. We thought you might like to know these facts about cancer care at Providence:

High-quality, comprehensive cancer care: The Cancer Center at Providence is staffed with six medical oncologists and two radiation oncologists. These physicians are supported by a dedicated team of professional, compassionate associates, offering patients a full range of chemotherapy and radiation therapy services. The Cancer Center at Providence also offers clinical trials as part of its physicians’ commitment to offer cutting edge therapy. In recognition of its high-quality, comprehensive services, the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons has accredited the Cancer Center at Providence as a “Community Hospital Comprehensive Cancer Center.”

Dedicated, compassionate inpatient services: Providence Hospital’s Oncology Care Unit (OCU) provides a special opportunity for patients requiring hospitalization to receive oncology care through a collaborative, multi-disciplinary team approach. The OCU staff works together to provide optimal care to persons with an actual or potential diagnosis of cancer. Inpatient care focuses on patients receiving intensive chemotherapy regimes, pain management and radioactive isotopes or implants.

Stem Cell transplantation, right here in Mobile: More than a decade ago, peripheral blood progenitor cell transplantation, (also known as stem cell transplantation) emerged as an effective therapeutic intervention for a variety of malignancies. In response to this new innovation, the Cancer Center developed a program aimed at providing offering access to high dose chemotherapy in the local setting. This stem cell program has evolved into an independent initiative whose primary goal is to provide care for patients with myeloma and lymphoma in the community setting in an environment that fosters medical and psychological support.

A strong commitment to educational and support programs: Along with the American Cancer Society and other local and national agencies, Providence provides educational programs such as “I Can Cope” for cancer survivors; “Stretch” classes for patients with breast cancer; Camp Bluebird, an adult camp for patients with cancer; and several support groups.
